Fusion Materials Lead in Material Technology
Dr. David Bowden is leading the Metallics Group within the Materials Division at UKAEA. This team focusses primarily on the development of structural metallics required for in vessel components with the fusion plant. As part of this, the team are evaluating the full lifecycle of material considerations, right from conceptual alloy design and manufacture, through to testing under load (including irradiation), and to activation considerations for safe disposal at end of life. In addition, David leads the £12.5m NEURONE (Neutron Irradiation of Advanced Steels) programme, seeking to develop a nano-structured advanced steel capable of enabling sustained operation of in-vessel structures at higher temperatures than conventional steels can achieve.
